Tech – Google Workspace

About Google Workspace

Google Workspace (G Suite) is a suite of tools including email, calendar, chat, file storage, web conferencing and more. It is a good alternative to Microsoft Office 365, though in my opinion the tools are much nicer to work with than Microsoft. I find Google Docs and Google Sheets feel more fluid and faster to work with compared to Office 365. There are some features/functions not included but for most people the Google apps will be perfectly fine.

There are some drawbacks in comparison to Microsoft Office 365. An example being PowerPoint has better handling of video than Google Slides but often find many creative teams prefer to use Apple Keynote anyway.

I find a lot of companies that opt to use Google Workspace also end up purchasing Microsoft Office 365 for the Desktop apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) but also for the Microsoft Teams service for communications with some clients.

Google Drive for Desktop is installed at most companies I work for on both Windows and MacOS and many creative teams now use it as their primary storage for Adobe files, Vectorworks File, Cinema files, etc..

My Experience with Google Workspace

I have used Google Workspace since it was called Google Apps and I am a Google Workspace Reseller (also Microsoft). I have done many Google Workspace migrations from local mail servers such as Kerio but also from Microsoft Office 365.

I can do all the usual setups of Google Workspace. Setup domains with MX, SFP, DKIM, DMARC records, Google Drive, Gmail, 2-step verification (Multi-factor Authentication), etc.. More recently I have setup the add-on product called Cloud Identity Premium and configured what is called Context Aware Access [aka Conditional Access] which secures Google Workspace to secured company devices only.

I use GAM which is a terminal based project that speaks to the Google Workspace APIs to automate tasks that take too long in the web based interface. This tool allows me to automate most of the onboarding and offboarding. The tool also allows me to make bulk updates to user accounts, groups, file permissions, etc… It helps takes the repetitive work away.
