My Experience with macOS Server
macOS Server I have supported since 1999.
Earliest version I used was based on System 7 on an Apple Workgroup Server (9650 I think).
I worked with every version of Mac OS X Server and still have a few old servers (that are being worked out of the business) that still have it.
macOS Server provided the businesses of various network services, services I used include:
- Netboot
- Netinstall
- DHCP
- DNS
- VPN
- AFP
- SMB
- Open Directory
- iChat Server (Jabber)
Over the years I have supported various installations on all kinds of Apple Hardware. I setup the famous ‘Magic Triangle’ of Open Directory and Active Directory to achieve a Windows/Mac friendly server setup.
In 2023 we should only be using OS X Server while removing it! Typically replaced with cloud services such as Google Workspace or LucidLink or locally hosted Synology or QNAP NAS.
